Albuquerque, NM – Tree New Mexico and the Greater Albuquerque Habitat for Humanity will plant more than 30 trees at six of the Habitat for Humanity Homes. “What we’re really doing is building communities by planting trees,” says Tree New Mexico executive director, Suzanne Probart. “Trees don’t just look nice and provide shade; they teach us how to be a more responsible member of the community and give us a sense of pride in our surroundings.” Trees can save 10 – 30% of total summer air conditioning costs when placed on the west and south side of your home.” Also, trees improve children’s health, increase property values, lower area crime rates, and save municipalities money through savings in stormwater management infrastructure.

Greater Albuquerque Habitat for Humanity (GAHH) builds community – one home, one family at a time – by making it possible for low-income families to own simple, decent, affordable homes. “This partnership project with Tree New Mexico and the Habitat families brings out the best in our community – the talents and interests of youth with the encouragement and support from their parents and other family members to build and plant something of value for the future... and have fun as a team along the way!” said Joe Martinez, Director of Programs, GAHH.

“Having local organizations like Tree New Mexico participate in these programs helps us show the cumulative effect of a burgeoning urban and community forestry movement,” said ACT Executive Director Alice Ewen Walker. Founded in 1993, the Alliance for Community Trees is a national coalition of 97 nonprofit organizations engaged in urban and community forestry. This project is sponsored through a generous grant from The Home Depot Foundation.

“The Community Trees – Healthy Neighborhoods program offers a unique opportunity for people to understand the contributions of trees to the health, beauty and livability of their communities,” said Kelly Caffarelli, executive director of The Home Depot Foundation. “By partnering with ACT and local organizations like Tree New Mexico, The Foundation is able to further its goals of investing in the overall health and success of our communities.”
